My Work:
Hi
I’m a practice nurse I work at a general practice surgery and get involved in lots of things from giving vaccinations, doing smears, wound care, giving injections, blood pressures. Talking to people about how they would like to be healthier and sign posting them to services.
Helping people with long term conditions such as asthma. How they can manage is day to day and what to do if they are struggling, or diabetes or cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure.
I am doing a prescribing course so I can order medications and I can assess people physically and mentally.
I was a nurse for 16 years before being a practice nurse but you can go in from qualifiying and also be a practice nurse starting as a health care assistant or apprentice.

My Typical Day:
I start work at 8am and see my first patient at 8.15. I might see patients every 15mins with some breaks, they all have very different needs it’s very varied. I tidy after every patient has it helps me stay organised and keeps the evironment clear. I also have lots of phone calls with patients to make – which means using the computer to look at notes and write things down. I finish at 4pm and go home and see my family.

Take every opportunity – nursing is such a varied career. I love what I’m doing now as I have the opportunity to listen to individual and change processes on a larger scale.

My mum said when I was 17 write down everything you are interested in – I wrote working with people, health, psychology, not being too academic – have a job at the end of it. She came up with nursing.
